Environmentalist Rajeev Singh inaugurates Hodopathy.org, Hodopathy.in and Hodopathy.com in Giridih, bringing together traditional Adivasi elders, community knowledge holders and digital technology to preserve centuries-old indigenous wisdom, medicinal plants and forest biodiversity.

Giridih, Jharkhand | 8 October 2026

In an important step towards preserving Jharkhand’s centuries-old indigenous healing traditions, environmentalist, agripreneur and sustainability advocate Rajeev Singh inaugurated three dedicated Hodopathy websites — Hodopathy.org, Hodopathy.in and Hodopathy.com — on 8 October 2026 in Giridih, Jharkhand.

The inauguration took place in the presence of traditional Adivasi elders, indigenous knowledge holders, community representatives and young participants at Singh’s residential office in Giridih.

The digital initiative aims to document and preserve the traditional healing knowledge of Jharkhand’s indigenous communities while promoting medicinal plant conservation, forest biodiversity protection, scientific research and environmental awareness.

By bringing traditional knowledge holders and digital platforms together, the initiative seeks to ensure that valuable indigenous wisdom, passed down orally through generations, remains accessible to future generations with appropriate recognition and respect for its original custodians.

Digitally Preserving Centuries-Old Adivasi Healing Traditions

Hodopathy is associated with the traditional indigenous healing practices and medicinal plant knowledge of Adivasi communities, particularly in Jharkhand.

For generations, traditional healers and community elders have developed knowledge of local medicinal plants, their identification, preparation methods and customary uses through observation, practical experience and close relationships with forests and natural ecosystems.

Much of this knowledge has historically been preserved through oral traditions rather than formal written records.

However, rapid social changes, declining intergenerational knowledge transfer, habitat degradation and the disappearance of certain medicinal plants have raised concerns about the future of this heritage.

The Hodopathy digital initiative has been developed to address these challenges by encouraging systematic documentation, community participation and responsible knowledge sharing.

The objective is not merely to create an online collection of traditional practices but to establish a long-term framework connecting indigenous cultural heritage with biodiversity conservation and scientific understanding.

Three Digital Platforms Dedicated to Indigenous Knowledge Conservation

The three newly inaugurated websites are intended to support a shared mission while creating opportunities for educational outreach, documentation and public engagement.

Hodopathy.org — Indigenous Knowledge and Conservation

Hodopathy.org is intended to support the broader mission of preserving traditional knowledge, protecting medicinal plants and promoting forest biodiversity conservation.

The platform seeks to encourage awareness of indigenous cultural heritage and the ecological importance of traditional plant knowledge.

It also provides a digital identity for the initiative’s long-term conservation and community engagement objectives.

Hodopathy.in — Traditional Knowledge and Research

Hodopathy.in focuses on communicating information about Hodopathy, its cultural background, traditional medicinal plant knowledge and opportunities for responsible scientific study.

The platform is intended to encourage educational engagement among students, researchers, traditional knowledge holders and institutions interested in indigenous knowledge documentation.

Hodopathy.com — Digital Outreach and Knowledge Sharing

Hodopathy.com is envisioned as an additional digital platform for public awareness, educational resources and communication concerning traditional knowledge and medicinal plant conservation.

Together, the three websites form a digital foundation for connecting indigenous wisdom with contemporary conservation and educational efforts.

Traditional Adivasi Elders Participate in Website Inauguration

A significant feature of the inauguration was the participation of elderly Adivasi knowledge holders, whose experiences represent an important part of Jharkhand’s indigenous cultural heritage.

The event highlighted the importance of recognising traditional elders as custodians of knowledge developed and preserved over many generations.

Their participation also reinforced the initiative’s commitment to community involvement rather than treating traditional knowledge simply as information to be collected.

Through future documentation activities, the initiative seeks to encourage interactions between experienced elders, young volunteers and interested researchers.

Such exchanges can help preserve knowledge of local plant species, traditional ecological practices, cultural terminology and community relationships with the natural environment.

Respect for informed consent, community rights and acknowledgement of knowledge holders is intended to remain central to this process.

Rajeev Singh’s Vision: Protecting Knowledge Means Protecting Forests

Rajeev Singh’s Hodopathy initiative is based on the understanding that traditional knowledge preservation and environmental conservation are closely interconnected.

Jharkhand’s indigenous communities have historically maintained deep relationships with forests, medicinal plants, biodiversity and local ecosystems.

Many traditional practices depend upon the availability of particular plant species and the ecological conditions in which they grow.

Consequently, the degradation of forests and the disappearance of medicinal plants can also threaten the survival of associated cultural knowledge.

The initiative therefore emphasises that protecting indigenous wisdom requires simultaneous efforts to conserve medicinal plants, restore suitable habitats and strengthen awareness of forest biodiversity.

This integrated approach connects cultural preservation with broader objectives of environmental sustainability and ecological restoration.

Hodopathy Park in Gandey to Support Medicinal Plant Conservation

An important part of the broader conservation vision is Hodopathy Park in Gandey, Giridih district, which is associated with efforts to promote medicinal plant preservation and environmental education.

The park is intended to connect traditional knowledge documentation with practical activities such as medicinal plant cultivation, species identification and biodiversity awareness.

Future activities may include conservation demonstrations, educational visits, community learning programmes and interactions with traditional knowledge holders.

By connecting physical conservation activities with digital documentation, the initiative seeks to develop a more comprehensive approach to protecting indigenous ecological heritage.

Hodopathy Park could also provide opportunities for younger generations to understand the importance of conserving native medicinal plants and maintaining healthy forest ecosystems.

Plans for a Digital Knowledge Collection and Publication

The Hodopathy initiative also envisages developing a structured digital collection of traditional knowledge contributed by experienced indigenous elders and healers.

The proposed documentation may include information about local plant names, traditional ecological practices, cultural contexts and knowledge of medicinal plant identification.

Another proposed activity is the preparation of a publication documenting the experiences and contributions of traditional knowledge holders.

Such efforts could help preserve information that has historically remained within oral traditions and family or community knowledge systems.

The initiative recognises that traditional medicinal knowledge must be documented responsibly. Cultural documentation does not establish the clinical safety or effectiveness of traditional treatments, which would require appropriate scientific evaluation.

The documentation process is also expected to respect community consent, cultural sensitivities and applicable protections for traditional knowledge.

Encouraging Scientific Research and Academic Collaboration

Beyond cultural preservation, the initiative aims to create opportunities for scientific engagement with traditional medicinal plant knowledge.

Potential research areas include botanical identification, medicinal plant diversity, sustainable cultivation, conservation biology and the scientific evaluation of traditionally documented plant applications.

The initiative envisages possible collaboration with universities, agricultural institutions, botanical experts and scientific research organisations.

Such collaborations could help strengthen documentation methods, improve conservation planning and promote evidence-based understanding of medicinal plant biodiversity.

Scientific studies, where undertaken, would need to follow appropriate ethical procedures, regulatory requirements and research standards.

Involving Young People in Indigenous Knowledge Preservation

The long-term preservation of Hodopathy depends on creating meaningful connections between traditional elders and younger generations.

Young people can play an important role in recording oral histories, documenting local plant names, participating in conservation programmes and learning about indigenous ecological knowledge.

The digital platforms are intended to support this process by making suitable educational information more accessible.

Future awareness activities may include workshops, medicinal plant identification programmes, community interactions and environmental education initiatives.

Through such activities, the initiative seeks to encourage young people to recognise indigenous knowledge as an important component of Jharkhand’s cultural and ecological identity.

Respecting Indigenous Communities and Traditional Knowledge Rights

An essential principle of the Hodopathy initiative is that traditional knowledge must be preserved with respect for the communities from which it originates.

Indigenous knowledge is often deeply connected to cultural identity, collective heritage, customary practices and community relationships with nature.

Its documentation therefore requires careful attention to informed consent, attribution, privacy and appropriate knowledge-sharing practices.

The initiative seeks to promote a responsible approach in which traditional knowledge holders are acknowledged and community interests remain central.

Any future research, publication or potential commercial application involving protected traditional knowledge should respect applicable legal and ethical requirements, including benefit-sharing obligations where relevant.

A New Digital Chapter for Jharkhand’s Indigenous Heritage

The launch of Hodopathy.org, Hodopathy.in and Hodopathy.com on 8 October 2026 represents an early milestone in efforts to digitally preserve Jharkhand’s indigenous healing knowledge.

The initiative brings together traditional Adivasi elders, environmental conservation objectives and modern digital communication to address the growing need for safeguarding cultural and ecological heritage.

It also highlights the importance of recognising indigenous communities as active participants in knowledge preservation, rather than merely as sources of historical information.

By linking traditional wisdom with medicinal plant conservation, scientific engagement and youth education, the Hodopathy initiative seeks to establish a sustainable foundation for long-term knowledge protection.

The three websites are intended to serve as platforms through which traditional knowledge can be documented responsibly, conservation awareness can be expanded and future generations can learn about Jharkhand’s rich indigenous heritage.

The larger mission extends beyond digital preservation: it is about protecting the people, plants, forests and cultural traditions that have sustained indigenous knowledge for centuries.

Through continued community participation, responsible research and conservation activities, the Hodopathy initiative aims to help ensure that this living heritage remains recognised, respected and protected for generations to come.

Three dedicated websites launched in Giridih to safeguard traditional Adivasi healing knowledge, document indigenous heritage, conserve medicinal plants and protect forest biodiversity.

Dainik Jagran | Dhanbad Edition | 9 October 2026

Giridih, Jharkhand, India: Environmentalist, agripreneur and sustainability advocate Rajeev Singh’s initiative to preserve Hodopathy, a traditional indigenous healing system associated with Jharkhand’s Adivasi communities, has been featured in Dainik Jagran, one of India’s leading Hindi newspapers.

Published in its Dhanbad edition on 9 October 2026, under the headline “गिरिडीह में होड़ोपैथी चिकित्सा पद्धति के संरक्षण की पहल”, the report highlighted efforts to safeguard centuries-old indigenous knowledge, document traditional medicinal plant practices and promote forest and biodiversity conservation.

The newspaper covered the inauguration of three dedicated digital platforms — Hodopathy.org, Hodopathy.in and Hodopathy.com — at Rajeev Singh’s residential office in Giridih. These websites aim to preserve the experiences and traditional knowledge of Adivasi elders, experienced healers and local plant experts, ensuring that this valuable heritage can be passed on to future generations.

The initiative is also linked with Hodopathy Park in Gandey, Giridih, connecting indigenous knowledge preservation with medicinal plant conservation and ecological awareness.

Preserving Traditional Knowledge Through Digital Documentation

For generations, Jharkhand’s Adivasi communities have maintained extensive knowledge of forests, medicinal plants and their traditional uses. Much of this knowledge has survived through oral traditions, making systematic documentation increasingly important.

Rajeev Singh and his team are working with traditional healers, community elders and local plant experts to record their experiences, identify medicinal plant species and document customary practices. The collected information is being reviewed and compared with available scientific literature.

According to the report, the initiative will progress through three phases: creating a digital repository of traditional knowledge, publishing a book documenting the experiences of senior healers and medicinal plants, and training young people in plant identification, conservation and documentation.

The programme also proposes collaboration with research institutions to scientifically investigate the safety and effectiveness of selected traditional medicinal practices.

Protecting Medicinal Plants and Forest Biodiversity

Rajeev Singh emphasised that preserving Hodopathy requires protecting the medicinal plants and forests closely associated with this traditional knowledge.

The initiative seeks to encourage the cultivation and conservation of indigenous medicinal plant species, strengthen community participation and contribute to the protection of Jharkhand’s forest ecosystems.

Traditional healers, Adivasi elders, students, teachers, researchers and social organisations have been invited to participate. Respect for the consent, rights and contributions of traditional knowledge holders remains central to the documentation process.

Community Participation and a Shared Conservation Vision

The website inauguration programme brought together traditional healers, representatives of Adivasi communities and members of the organising team.

Among those present were CA Rakesh, Rimi Singh, Saman, Shubham, Sonali, Anchal Singh, Anand Murmu, Vinita Tudu and Manoj Hembrom, along with other community representatives.

Guided by four priorities — Preserve Knowledge, Protect Plants, Advance Research and Share Learning — the initiative seeks to connect indigenous wisdom with digital technology, scientific research and environmental conservation.

The coverage in Dainik Jagran has helped bring wider public attention to the importance of preserving Jharkhand’s indigenous heritage and the natural ecosystems that sustain it.

Rajeev Singh expressed his appreciation to Dainik Jagran for highlighting the initiative and helping raise awareness about the conservation of traditional knowledge, medicinal plants and forests.

The mission reflects his broader commitment to environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservation and community-led efforts to protect India’s cultural and ecological heritage for future generations.

Elders and experts, led by Rajeev Singh, are driving a community effort to record traditional plant-based healthcare practices for formal review.

Published: October 4, 2026 | Location: Giridih, Jharkhand | Category: Regional / Health & Tribal Culture

SIMARKOTHI, GIRIDIH — In a major initiative aimed at safeguarding indigenous healthcare wisdom and promoting natural living, a high-impact awareness seminar on Hodopathy—the traditional tribal system of plant-based medicine—was organised today in Simarkothi village under the Pirtand block of Giridih district.

The event drew an overwhelming response, with a large turnout of local villagers, tribal elders, traditional practitioners (Pahans and Vaidyas), and youth filling the venue.

Addressing the gathering as key speaker, Rajeev Singh underscored the critical importance of integrating natural, forest-derived remedies into primary health care. They emphasised that Hodopathy represents centuries of empirical knowledge rooted in the symbiotic relationship between tribal communities and their local ecosystems.

“Hodopathy is not just an ancient tradition; it is a sustainable, accessible approach to wellness,” noted the speakers. “By understanding the healing properties of nature, rural communities can address common health issues while keeping their ancestral heritage alive.”

During the interactive session, village elders and local health practitioners shared traditional remedies utilising forest herbs, roots, bark, and seasonal plants native to the Parasnath and Pirtand forest region. Topics of discussion included natural immunity boosters, treatments for seasonal fevers, digestive ailments, and first-aid wound care using non-synthetic ingredients.

A primary objective of the seminar was the systematic documentation of this largely oral heritage. To prevent the loss of valuable traditional wisdom, all discussions, plant recipes, and diagnostic methods shared by the participants were meticulously recorded in writing and audio format. Organisers confirmed that these records will undergo formal review, scientific documentation, and botanical verification for future research and archival purposes.

The seminar concluded with a collective pledge by the villagers of Simarkothi to protect the surrounding forest biodiversity and establish local medicinal plant gardens (Herbal Poshan Vatikas). Follow-up sessions are slated to be conducted across the Pirtand region to expand the documentation initiative.

By Rajeev Singh

India’s knowledge heritage has developed through many communities, languages and ways of life. Its traditions related to health, food, plants, forests, farming, and community well-being have been shaped by classical learning systems, indigenous Adivasi knowledge, local practices, and generations of practical experience.

Ayurveda and Hodopathy are often discussed together because both recognise the importance of nature, plants, food habits and balance in human wellbeing. Yet they are not the same tradition. They have different cultural roots, methods of learning, languages, forms of documentation and relationships with local communities.

Understanding these distinctions is important. It helps us recognise Hodopathy with its own identity, while also appreciating Ayurveda as one of India’s important classical knowledge systems.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a classical Indian system of health and wellbeing that developed within the Sanskritic and Vedic knowledge tradition. Its principles are documented in texts such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya.

Ayurveda includes organised concepts of body constitution, often described through Vata, Pitta and Kapha. It considers diet, daily habits, seasonal routines, herbs, therapies and preventive wellbeing as important elements of a healthy life.

Over time, Ayurveda developed a formal structure of study and practice. It is now taught in recognised colleges and institutions, supported by written literature, standard terminology, trained professionals and regulated systems of education and practice.

What is Hodopathy?

Hodopathy is an indigenous Adivasi knowledge tradition associated particularly with the Ho community and other Adivasi communities of Jharkhand. It has developed through generations of close observation of forests, hills, rivers, soil, wildlife, seasonal foods and medicinal plants.

Hodopathy is not mainly based on classical Sanskrit texts or formal institutions. Its knowledge has traditionally been carried through oral learning, lived experience, observation, community practice and the guidance of elders and traditional knowledge holders.

A Hodopathy knowledge holder may understand the local name of a plant, the forest or landscape where it grows, the appropriate season for collection, the method of preparation and the cultural responsibility connected with its use. This makes Hodopathy deeply connected with local ecology and community life.

“Hodopathy is not merely about medicinal plants. It is a living relationship between people, forests, food, seasons, culture and collective memory.”
— Rajeev Singh

Rajeev Singh’s Hodopathy and Ayurveda infographic showing Ayurvedic herbal knowledge, Adivasi elders in Jharkhand forests, shared values and ethical preservation.
Rajeev Singh presents the differences and shared values of Hodopathy and Ayurveda, with a focus on Jharkhand’s Adivasi knowledge heritage.

Key Differences Between Ayurveda and Hodopathy

Point Ayurveda Hodopathy
Cultural foundation Classical Sanskritic and Vedic knowledge tradition Indigenous Adivasi knowledge tradition, especially associated with the Ho community
Knowledge transmission Written texts, formal study and recognised institutions Oral learning, observation, practical experience and community knowledge holders
Language base Sanskrit and later many regional languages Ho language and other local Adivasi languages
Nature of knowledge Codified, structured and widely documented Local, ecological, community-based and living tradition
Geographical character Studied and practised across India and internationally Strongly connected with Jharkhand’s forests, land, seasons and communities
Present recognition Formal education, professional training and regulated systems Needs greater documentation, community protection and ethical recognition
Main knowledge setting Texts, institutions, clinics and formal learning Forests, villages, homes, farms and intergenerational community learning

It is therefore not accurate to call Hodopathy simply “Ayurveda of Jharkhand.” Such a description may unintentionally hide Hodopathy’s separate Adivasi identity. Hodopathy has its own cultural memory, local plant knowledge, language, methods of preparation and understanding of the relationship between people and nature.

Similarities Between Ayurveda and Hodopathy

Despite their different origins and systems of learning, Ayurveda and Hodopathy share important values.

Both traditions recognise that human wellbeing is connected with nature. Both value plants, food habits, seasonal awareness and preventive care. Both encourage people to observe their environment and respect the role of natural resources in daily life.

Both traditions also remind us that wellbeing is not only about treating illness. It is connected with lifestyle, food, cleanliness, rest, seasonal discipline, social relationships and the responsible use of natural resources.

Shared Value Ayurveda Hodopathy
Nature-based understanding Uses herbs, diet and seasonal routines Uses local plants, foods, forests and ecological knowledge
Preventive wellbeing Focuses on daily and seasonal practices Emphasises local food, seasonal living and community practices
Plant knowledge Documents herbs and formulations Preserves local knowledge of plants and their habitats
Holistic view Connects body, lifestyle and environment Connects people, community, culture and nature
Intergenerational learning Knowledge passed through teachers and texts Knowledge passed through elders, families and community practice

“Ayurveda and Hodopathy have different roots, but both teach us an essential truth: human wellbeing cannot be separated from respect for nature.”
— Rajeev Singh

Why Hodopathy Needs Protection

Ayurveda has received wide recognition through books, colleges, institutions and formal education. Hodopathy, however, remains less documented and is at risk of being lost.

Forest degradation, migration, weakening of local languages, reduced learning from elders and unauthorised use of indigenous knowledge can slowly erode this valuable heritage. When an elder passes away without transferring knowledge to younger generations, a part of Jharkhand’s cultural and ecological memory may disappear.

Documentation of Hodopathy must be ethical and community-led. Traditional knowledge holders should be recognised as contributors and rights holders, not treated only as sources of information. Their prior consent must be taken before recording, researching or publishing knowledge. If research or commercial activity creates benefits, those benefits should be shared fairly with the concerned communities.

Responsible Use and Public Safety

Respecting Hodopathy does not mean making unsafe or unverified claims. Traditional knowledge should not be promoted as a replacement for hospitals, emergency care, diagnosis or treatment by qualified medical professionals.

For serious illness, infection, injury, pregnancy complications or chronic health conditions, people must seek appropriate medical advice. Responsible research should examine traditional knowledge carefully, with safety, evidence, community consent and public wellbeing as guiding principles.

Infographic by Rajeev Singh comparing Hodopathy and Ayurveda, featuring Jharkhand Adivasi forest knowledge, medicinal plants, oral traditions and classical Ayurvedic learning.
Rajeev Singh explains why Hodopathy is a distinct Jharkhand Adivasi knowledge tradition, while recognising its shared respect for nature with Ayurveda.

Conclusion

India does not have one single knowledge tradition. It has many. Ayurveda represents an important classical Sanskritic and Vedic system with written texts, institutional learning and a long history of formal study. Hodopathy represents a valuable indigenous Adivasi knowledge tradition rooted in Jharkhand’s forests, communities, languages and lived ecological experience.

The purpose of recognising their differences is not to create division. It is to give each tradition its rightful identity and respect.

Protecting Hodopathy means protecting Adivasi dignity, the wisdom of elders, local languages, medicinal plant knowledge, forests, biodiversity and the cultural heritage of Jharkhand.

“India becomes stronger when every community’s knowledge is recognised with dignity, protected with ethics and carried forward for future generations.”
— Rajeev Singh

Hodopathy Plants: Preserving Nature’s Knowledge and Tribal Heritage

Written by Rajeev Singh
Founder, Hodopathy Initiative, Jharkhand

For thousands of years, human communities have depended on forests and plants for food, nutrition, wellness and survival. Tribal and rural communities have developed an especially deep understanding of local plants through observation, experience and knowledge passed orally from one generation to another.

Hodopathy is an initiative to identify, document, conserve and scientifically evaluate this valuable plant-based traditional knowledge. It does not promote unverified remedies or encourage self-medication. Instead, it seeks to build an ethical bridge between indigenous knowledge, botanical science, conservation and responsible research.

What Are Hodopathy Plants?

Hodopathy plants are medicinal, nutritional, ecological or culturally important plants connected with the traditional knowledge of tribal communities, forest dwellers, rural families and local knowledge holders.

Different parts of these plants—including leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, roots, bark, stems, resin and latex—have traditionally been used for food, wellness, agriculture, livestock care and cultural practices.

Every plant included in the Hodopathy knowledge system should be properly identified, documented and scientifically studied before making any therapeutic claim.

Why This Knowledge Must Be Preserved

Much of India’s indigenous plant knowledge remains undocumented. It survives in the memories of traditional healers, elderly community members, tribal women, farmers and forest-dependent families.

This heritage is disappearing because of:

  • Deforestation and loss of natural habitats
  • Destructive harvesting of medicinal plants
  • Declining transfer of knowledge to younger generations
  • Disappearance of experienced traditional knowledge holders
  • Incorrect botanical identification
  • Commercial exploitation without community consent
  • Absence of written and digital records

When a knowledgeable elder passes away without transferring their knowledge, society may lose generations of experience. Documentation is therefore not merely an academic activity—it is an urgent cultural and ecological responsibility.

Hodopathy Plant Documentation

Hodopathy proposes a structured method for documenting plants:

  1. Record the local, tribal, regional and scientific names of the plant.
  2. Photograph the plant in its natural habitat.
  3. Verify its botanical identity with qualified experts.
  4. Document the plant parts traditionally used.
  5. Record traditional preparation and application methods.
  6. Identify the season, habitat and geographical distribution.
  7. collect information only with the informed consent of knowledge holders.
  8. Document known safety concerns and possible toxicity.
  9. Study existing scientific and ethnobotanical research.
  10. Protect community ownership and benefit-sharing rights.

Sensitive or sacred knowledge should not be published without explicit permission from the concerned community.

Conservation Before Commercialisation

Medicinal plants should not be viewed only as commercial raw materials. Many species face pressure because their roots, bark or entire plants are harvested without allowing natural regeneration.

Hodopathy promotes:

  • Community medicinal-plant gardens
  • Ethical and seasonal harvesting
  • Cultivation of frequently used species
  • Local nurseries and seed banks
  • Protection of rare plant habitats
  • Digital plant documentation
  • Participation of tribal youth and women
  • Fair benefit-sharing with knowledge-holding communities

Conservation must always come before commercial exploitation.

Connecting Traditional Knowledge with Science

Traditional knowledge can provide important directions for scientific research, but traditional use alone does not prove that a plant is safe or effective for treating a disease.

Botanical authentication, laboratory analysis, toxicity studies, dosage assessment and responsible clinical research are necessary before therapeutic conclusions can be made.

Through Hodopathy, we aim to build a collaborative platform connecting:

  • Tribal communities and traditional knowledge holders
  • Botanists and ethnobotanists
  • Agricultural and forestry institutions
  • Pharmacologists and scientific researchers
  • Conservation organisations
  • Universities and research laboratories
  • Young volunteers and community documenters

My Vision for Hodopathy

My vision is to develop Hodopathy as an ethical knowledge movement originating from Jharkhand. The forests and tribal communities of Jharkhand possess an extraordinary heritage of plant knowledge that deserves respectful documentation, conservation and scientific attention.

Hodopathy is not intended to replace modern medicine or any recognised medical system. It is an initiative to preserve disappearing knowledge, protect medicinal plants, encourage responsible scientific research and ensure that communities receive recognition and fair benefits for their contribution.

Every documented plant represents a relationship between people, forests, culture and generations of observation. By preserving these relationships, we protect not only medicinal knowledge but also biodiversity and our shared natural heritage.

Rajeev Singh works with tribal knowledge-holders and researchers at a bright, open-air herbal processing centre in Jharkhand. The team dries, sorts, examines, weighs, grinds and documents medicinal plants for the Hodopathy research initiative.
Traditional knowledge meets responsible research as Rajeev Singh and Jharkhand’s tribal communities study, process and document local medicinal plants.

Rajeev Singh supports a community-led approach that combines Jharkhand’s traditional botanical knowledge with organised research, quality assessment and sustainable plant processing.

🌿 Hodopathy: Giving Jharkhand’s Indigenous Healing Knowledge a Scientific and Sustainable Future

Jharkhand’s forests are more than natural resources—they are living repositories of knowledge. For generations, tribal communities have understood the properties of local herbs, roots, leaves, seeds and forest produce, using this wisdom in their traditional wellness practices.

Much of this valuable knowledge remains undocumented. As oral traditions gradually disappear, we risk losing not only information about medicinal plants but also an important part of Jharkhand’s cultural identity.

Hodopathy is envisioned as an initiative to preserve, document and responsibly study this indigenous plant-based knowledge. Its purpose is not to make unverified claims or present traditional practices as a substitute for modern medicine. The objective is to build a responsible bridge between community knowledge and scientific research.

The future of Hodopathy should be based on five principles:

• Respect and recognition for tribal knowledge holders
• Prior informed consent and equitable benefit-sharing
• Scientific identification, testing and safety validation
• Conservation and sustainable cultivation of medicinal plants
• Livelihood and entrepreneurship opportunities for local communities

Jharkhand has the potential to emerge as an important centre for ethnobotanical research, medicinal-plant conservation and community-led wellness innovation. Universities, research institutions, botanists, pharmacologists and tribal organisations can collectively help transform undocumented knowledge into properly researched and responsibly developed solutions.

However, commercial development must never come at the cost of community rights. The people who have protected this knowledge for generations must remain recognised participants and beneficiaries—not merely sources of information.

Through Hodopathy, we can work towards a future where Jharkhand’s traditional wisdom is preserved with dignity, examined through science and developed responsibly for the benefit of society.

I invite researchers, universities, tribal organisations, government institutions and responsible enterprises to join this conversation and explore meaningful collaboration.
